JAPN 1010/JAPN 1020
Two introductory courses that laid the groundwork for learning Japanese, focusing on basic grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Emphasis was placed on developing fundamental skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students learned to construct simple sentences, engage in basic conversations, and read and write basic kanji. Cultural insights were also integrated to provide context and enhance understanding of the language.
JAPN 3050, JAPN 3060
These courses developed advanced skills in Japanese conversation and composition, emphasizing practical language use and fluency in diverse situations. The courses focused on improving oral communication skills through discussions, role-plays, and presentations They also emphasized written proficiency, including structured essays and detailed responses. Both courses integrated cultural contexts to deepen understanding of Japanese society and communication styles.
JAPN 2010/JAPN 2020
These courses continued the development of foundational language skills in Japanese, with a focus on expanding vocabulary, grammar, and kanji knowledge. Emphasis was placed on improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Students engaged with more complex sentence structures and conversational topics, as well as cultural aspects of Japan through various texts and multimedia resources.
Japanese for International Business I/II JAPN 3160/4160
These courses focused on building my Japanese language skills for professional settings. I learned how to communicate effectively in business contexts, from writing resumes to navigating meetings and work events. I also gained valuable insights into Japanese business etiquette and cultural practices.

MKT 3020 Consumer Behavior
This course focused on understanding the psychological, social, and cultural factors that influence consumer decision-making processes. Topics included consumer motivation, perception, learning, and the impact of external influences such as family, reference groups, and culture on buying behavior. The course also covered strategies for influencing consumer behavior in marketing and advertising.
MKT 3030 Marketing and Society
This course examined the relationship between marketing practices and their impact on society. Topics included ethical considerations in marketing, social responsibility, and the role of marketing in addressing societal issues. Students explored how marketing strategies can influence consumer behavior and societal trends, as well as the impact of marketing on various social groups and environmental sustainability. The course aimed to foster an understanding of how marketing can contribute positively to society while addressing potential ethical dilemmas and challenges.
MKT 4230 Promotional Strategy
This course explored the development and implementation of effective promotional strategies within marketing. It covered key topics such as advertising, public relations, sales promotions, and personal selling. Emphasis was placed on integrated marketing communications (IMC) and the role of digital and social media in modern promotional campaigns. The course also involved analyzing consumer response to promotional efforts and creating comprehensive promotional plans.
MGT 4230 International Business Management
This course focused on the management practices and strategies necessary for operating effectively in a global business environment. Topics included international business strategy, cross-cultural management, global supply chain management, and international human resource management. Students explored the challenges of managing multinational enterprises, including dealing with cultural differences, international regulations, and global market dynamics. The course aimed to equip students with the skills needed to manage and lead in a diverse and international business setting.

This course explored marketing strategies and practices in a global context. It covered topics such as market entry strategies, cross-cultural consumer behavior, international market research, and global branding. Students examined how different cultures influence marketing practices and learned to develop marketing plans tailored to diverse international markets. Students studied key directors, genres, and techniques, as well as the cultural and historical contexts of Japanese filmmaking. The course emphasized critical analysis of film narratives, themes, and visual style, offering insights into how Japanese films reflect and shape societal values and cultural identity.
JAPN 4060 Introduction to Japanese Literature
This course provided an overview of key works and themes in Japanese literature, spanning various historical periods and genres. Students studied classic and modern texts, including poetry, short stories, and novels, to understand the cultural and historical contexts of Japanese literary traditions. The course emphasized critical reading and analysis, exploring themes such as identity, society, and aesthetics in Japanese literature.
JAPN 4990 Selected Topics in Japanese Linguistic Culture
This course offered an in-depth exploration of specific aspects of Japanese linguistic and cultural studies. Topics included areas such as sociolinguistics, language learning, honorifics, and dialects. The course gave me a better understanding of how language ties into culture and society in Japan.
JAPN 4170 Japanese Culture and Society
This course, taken during a study abroad program in Japan, offered an immersive exploration of Japanese culture and society. It combined classroom learning with field trips to culturally significant sites, providing firsthand experiences of Japanese traditions and history. Topics included religion, art, family structure, education, and the influence of globalization on Japanese society. The blend of academic study and real-world exposure helped deepen understanding of Japan’s culture.

Topics varied each semester but typically included areas such as sociolinguistics, language change, language and identity, and regional dialects. PRTM 3050 Safety and Risk Management
This course focused on the principles and practices of safety and risk management within the fields of parks, recreation, and tourism. Topics included liability, risk assessment, legal considerations, and the development of safety protocols. Students learned how to identify potential risks and implement strategies to mitigate them, ensuring safe and sustainable management of recreational facilities and tourism operations. The course also emphasized crisis management and compliance with industry regulations.
POSC 1020 Introduction to International Relations
This course provided an overview of key concepts and theories in international relations, including global politics, diplomacy, and the roles of international organizations. It explored topics such as conflict, cooperation, security, and global economic systems, which gave me a better understanding of how nations with one another.
PSYC 2010 Introduction to Psychology
This course provided a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles and theories of psychology. Topics included cognitive processes, emotional development, personality, social behavior, and mental health. Students explored the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that influence human behavior, as well as the research methods used in psychological studies. The course aimed to develop a foundational understanding of human behavior and mental processes.
